Sarasota Golf Keeps Its Championship Form

The Sarasota region solidified its reputation as among the leading golf destinations in the U.S. In February 2021 as one of Sarasota’s prime country clubs, The Concession, hosted the PGA Workday Golf Championship. This blue-ribbon event is notably the first in the four-series World Golf Championship (WGC) and included top-rated golfers Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and so many more!

The multi-stop event was originally scheduled to be the WGC-Mexico, but the PGA moved the annual championship series to Florida because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The PGA’s choice of Sarasota as one of the stops in the Sunshine State came as a no-brainer with the beautiful weather and the renowned Jack Nicklaus course available to get prepped in only six weeks.

A pioneer in the sport

One of Sarasota’s claims to fame is its distinction as the “Cradle of Golf” in the U.S. This title was drawn from John Gillespie, a Scottish pioneer in Sarasota, who set up arguably the first golf course in the U.S. In May 1886, he set up a two-hole golfing ground between what is now Ringling Boulevard and Main Street.

Sarasota is also home to one of the oldest golf courses in the country—the Bobby Jones Golf Club. These 18-hole championship links opened in 1926. The golf course is set for a major renovation starting April 2021 and is expected to reopen in early 2022.

Backbone of residential communities

All told, there are29 golf courses in Sarasota County. Nearby areas offer a selection of 60 other golf courses. Many of these links were developed as a major part of master-planned country clubs and residential communities.

The newly renovated golf links of The Resort at the Longboat Key Club is one of the golfers’ favorites in the Sarasota region. This facility is the only golf course in Sarasota’s barrier islands. Players can choose from the 27-hole Harbourside Golf Course and the 18-hole Links on Longboaton the south side of the town.

Choice condos overlook links

Both layouts notably serve as a refreshing backdrop for a wide selection of luxury homes for sale in Longboat Key. The sales listing of The Judy Kepecz-Hays Team at the Privateer condominium, for example, overlooks the greens and fairways of the Links on Longboat. Our pending sale at the Fairway Bay Condominium, also in Longboat, just steps away from the resort’s Harbourside Golf Course.

Prospective buyers of condos at the Ritz-Carlton-managed condo residences in Sarasota and Lido Key also have the opportunity to join the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Lakewood Ranch. This 18-hole championship layout offers play across a superbly designed and maintained course around 12 shimmering lakes.

Noted course architect Tom Fazio designed this golf course which has copped several prestigious awards and hosted blue-ribbon tournaments. In 2018, The Ritz-Carlton golf course hosted the Florida State Amateur Championship. Golf Digest has cited this course as the Sunshine State’s best. The course is likewise noted for its environment-friendly setup that merited a nature’s sanctuary certification from the prestigious Audubon Society.

The sport of golf continues to gain following in Sarasota and contributes much to the region’s popularity as a home-buying destination. High-end residences in Sarasota’s various golf communities are among the most coveted local properties.
